This is a sort of "What if?" scenario I made up just for fun.
Say that Tokyo Mew Mew was getting a redub and the company plans on putting it on TV and they hope to keep to the original story as much as possible. While there might be some mild edits on TV, the DVD version will be uncut.
However, there are certain terms that they are unsure how to translate and they aren't sure what fans would prefer. So they posted up a list of questions that they want fans to answer and the ones that have the most votes will be used in the dub.
Here are some questions they might ask. I want you all to answer truthfully and, if you want, explain why you think your choices are best. These are multiple choice.
Question 1:
Since Bu-Ling/Purin is Chinese, there is some debate on how to say her name. How would you prefer to have her name said in the series?
a): Bu-Ling Huang (Original Mandarin pronunciation)
b): Purin Fon (The Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese Kanji)
c): Purin Huang (A mix of Japanese and Mandarin)
d): Have characters that can pronounce Chinese (Bu-Ling, her family, Ryou and Keiichiro) call her Bu-Ling but have her other Japanese friends call her Purin. (Note: This was how it was done in the original Japanese version.)
Question 2:
If the original Japanese creators didn't give you a choice at keeping the original main character names (they WANT you to give them western names), which group of names would you choose?
Note: The civilian names won't effect their names in Mew form (Mew Strawberry, Mew Mint, ect.)
a): The MMP names - Zoey, Corina, Bridget, Kikki and Renee
b): The Italian dubbed names - Strawberry, Mina, Lory, Paddy and Pam (Due to the civilian/Mew Mew identity, Ichigo might most likely keep her original name in this group XD.)
c): Other (If you choose this, put down what names you would want.)
Question 3:
Would you want Bu-Ling/Purin refer to herself in the third person (ex: saying "Bu-Ling/Purin" instead of "I") like in the original?
a): Yes
b): No
Question 4:
As most of you know, the weapon names in the original were puns, so there can be multiple ways of translating them. What would you want the weapons to be called?
a): StrawBell Bell, MinTone Arrow, Lettustanets, PuRing Rings and ZaCross Whip (the original Japanese puns)
b): Strawberry Bell Bell, Mint Tone Arrow, Lettuce Castanets, Pudding Rings and Zakuro Cross Whip (an accurate translation without the puns)
Question 5:
This company wants to translate the show as accurately as possible but they notice that some of the episode titles spoil what's going to happen in the episode itself. They don't want to spoil it for the viewers watching it on TV, so what should they do?
a): Shorten the titles to match the original as much as possible without the spoilers. (ex: putting down "Aoyama's Shocking Declaration" instead of "I Love You - Aoyama's Shocking Declaration")
b): Do the above but say the full title for DVD releases.
c): Forget new viewers! Put the full title on whether on TV or not!
d): Make up their own episode titles.
Question 6:
What channel would you want the new English dub to air on?
Note: No matter the channel, the company plans on simulcasting the dubbed episodes online around the same time it airs on TV.
a): Cartoon Network
b): Nickelodeon or NickToons
c): The CW (most likely on Saban's new block since Toonzai will be gone by then XD)
d): Other (If you choose this, specify which channel.)
Question 7:
How would you want DVDs to be released?
Note: A full series release is NOT an option.
a): Like the Japanese version. (singles with 6 episodes each and a DVD full of extras)
b): 13 episode boxsets (4 in all)
c): 13 episode boxsets at first but have a re-release later on with 26 episode boxsets (2 in all)
Question 8:
What kind of extras would you want on the regular edition DVDs?
a): Voice Actor Interviews
b): Bloopers
c): TV advertisements
d): Commentaries
e): All of the above.
Question 9:
What kind of goodies would you want on Special Edition DVDs?
a): CDs (containing Japanese an English versions of songs)
b): Keychains
c): Chibi figures
d): Booklet containing information on the show and characters.
e): All of the above.
Question 10:
How much would you be willing to pay for DVDs?
Note: This is the only question not multiple choice. Just put down how much you'd be willing to pay for both Regular Edition and/or Special Editing DVDs. Consider how much you will be getting from it when thinking of prices.
Question 11:
The dubbing company also found a way to make a merchandising deal. What kind of toys and goodies would you like to buy?
a): Plushies
b): Figures
c): Weapon Toys
d): Snacks
e): Others (specify)
f): All of the above.
There you have it. I'm interested to see what you guys would want XD.
